Empire magazine is once again compiling it's top 100 movies list. You can submit your top 10 online at www.empireonline.co.uk For once in my life I'd like to see something other than the complete shite that is Star Wars at number one. My own number one was Schindler's List, and the rest of the list has LotRs movies, two of the Godfather movies and, since I had a gap, The American President. ;D

I appreciate your sentiments regarding the predictability of the poll, as I shared them with regard to the Big Read poll (minus the words 'complete shite' before the Tolkien massive launches any vengeful attacks on such a heretic). But as a fully paid up member of the Star Wars generation I am obliged to take offence at the 'complete shite' description! The Ewoks, J** J** B**** and certain aspects of the prequels, yes, the first 2 films, most definitely not!
PS I have a strong suspicion that Empire has timed its latest poll to give LotR the maximum chance of winning, as its managing editor is such a huge fan. Right at the point when the 3rd film comes out... straight after "LotR: a celebration" special issue... straight after the book has won Big Read....hmmm... The last time they did such a poll was in the year when Star Wars Episode 1 came out. Funnily enough, after a year of saturation coverage in the magazine (its now managing editor, then editor, being an even bigger fan of Star Wars), Star Wars was no.1 and Empire Strikes Back no.3...hmmm... And the time before that was at the height of Tarantino-mania, and yep, Pulp Fiction won....HMMMMM.....

Have to agree with Mr President. Star Wars is shite.

I still suffer flashbacks I've seen four of the five films, I wanted to like them so I could see what the kick is that people get from Star Wars. I had..... I, er..... it all meant nothing to me. I'm glad they're making prequels though, because when I watch Star Wars I thought it was rather quick of the mark, no explanation of what the heck it was all about But I agree, what's the flavour of the month will no doubt help in garnering more votes. My brother is from the Star Wars generation and he would argue against my negative opinion of the saga.

There are those of a certain age and over-developed sensitivity that would refuse to accept that there's anything at all wrong with Star Wars. I like to think that I am the more rational kind of fan. I would still put the first 2 in my top 10 films ever, but OBJECTIVELY, for example, Mark Hamill is a terrible actor, even Harrison 'childhood hero' Ford is a bit wooden and there are some awful lines in the script. I really think a lot depends on when you were introduced to it and whether there's anything in the (obviously derivative) mythical elements that grabs you. As I grow older I often find myself agreeing with people who say it has "lost its magic" or who point out its flaws, but then again it was such a massive influence on childhood that Episode III will be my most eagerly-awaited film ever.
"Travelling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy!" Er.....right.

I have only seen New Hope SE. Hated it. Wanted to enjoy it but hated it. didn't bother with any of the rest (and I could have gone to see Phantom Menace for free). Special effects were worse than original Star Trek and the only character actually emoting was R2D2.
(Side note. Star Wars: Episode 4: A New Hope: E is the first film ever to have three sets of colond in the title.)

Well at least the special effects in TPM were state-of-the-art CGI and remarkable and everything, but they just made the whole thing seem more like a cartoon and detracted from the essential story-telling aspect, which, I still believe, was more important to the first trilogy's success than pure effects.
Anyway, there are many other films we could debate here instead! Perhaps people could share their top 10s if they have voted.

Perhaps people could share their top 10s if they have voted. I would do if I could find the voting form on the website.

It's on the mainpage, but, yeah, it's kind of hidden. It's located on the '100 greatest movie' page, accessed by the ad on the front page, or here www.empireonline.co.uk/greatest2004/
