Q: You have quite a history with your Le Divorce "husband," don't you?

A: "Yes, this is my fifth movie with Sam Waterston and the second time in the course of two years that he plays my husband! I just adore him. Since we've known each other for 25 years, when we got on the set, it was a very short jump into playing a family, saying, well, there's Sam, and there are our girls, Kate and Naomi -- who are both adorable and smart. It was rainy and chilly when we shot in Paris last spring, but we all had a lot of fun together, hanging out."

Q: What's your character like?

A: "She's that blunt American, hopefully a little different from me. She's a woman of a certain means who's smart and quite sophisticated. She calls a spade a spade in a quiet way -- very
different from the French way of talking around things."

Q: The West Wing has played a significant role in your life for the last four years. Do you think that some people have actually started to think of you as the First Lady?

A: "No, it's interesting. They love Abigail and have a tremendous response to her; she's an intelligent and gracious character, but she also has a lot of edges. The edgier she is, the more people seem to like her. Women stop to congratulate me, saying, 'You really kick butt!' But I don't have to walk around with the burden
that Martin [Sheen] has. People think he *is* the President because his impact is understandably so strong on the show."

Q: Is there a lot of you in Abby?

A: "Sometimes I wish there were *more* of her in me. She's much more accomplished than I am intellectually. She's a doctor and has raised three children. She's a wonder woman."

Q: Although you're in a long-term relationship now, you were divorced four times. Do you have any feelings about marriage versus non-marriage?

A: "People say to me, 'You see? You were doing it all wrong before. Now you *didn't* get married and you stayed together.' I don't think they're right. I think that everybody has her own path.
I don't want to sound flip or ponderous about divorce. It's painful and I don't make light of it. Everybody deals with it in their own way."

Q: Did you ever want kids?

A: "I have, off and on, because I know there's a hunk of human experience I'm not having, either motherhood or just raising kids, but I don't regret it in a visceral way."

Q: But you do have two dogs you're crazy about. Are they like children to you?

A: "They mean so much to me that it's probably a little strange. If they really were children, they'd be spoiled rotten. They have such a sense of entitlement, it's obscene. My [Rhodesian]
Ridgeback mix was named Bishop when I got him, so I decided not to traumatize him by changing his name; he's easily traumatized by anything -- he seems determined to expect bad news at any moment. My other dog is a mastiff mix called Louie
Laguna. He's totally a star and is the opposite, always thinking everything is going to go well. I have the odd couple."

Q: Your sister, Lesley Smith, is the mayor of Palm Beach, Florida. Are you close?

A: "Yes. We don't see each other very much, but we were a close-knit family -- just my sister, my mother, and me -- because my father died when I was a teenager. I think that always makes a family rather tight. We had a kind of 'us against the world' feeling because his death was pretty traumatic."

Q: Do you still cook?

A: "Yes. I learned to cook when I was in my 20s because I like to eat, and when you don't have any money and you want to eat well, you learn to cook for yourself. I still make much of my own
food, but now it's a source of relaxation."
