Have just found this thread and can't work out why I missed it for so long. The Lord Of The Rings is, without doubt, my favourite novel and would be one of my "Desert Island" companions. I generally read it about once a year and always find something new in it. I reckon I've read it at least a dozen times by now.
The films so far have been very good and I'm loathe to criticise as firstly we haven't seen the complete trilogy and secondly, there is no way to put everything from each book into film. The biggest acchievement for me is the way that Peter Jackson has brought every character to life. Hobbits, Orcs, Elves and even the Balrog are pretty much how I'd imagined them when I first read the book.
If you haven't read the trilogy already, don't read it until you have seen the films, as I believe that they will make the books more enjoyable.
If you have read the trilogy already, take the next step and read The Silmarillion, which is basically a history of Middle Earth. Really hard going, but well worth it.

It certainly is a slog, i kept flicking back to the family trees at the back to see who was related to who again.
But what an outstanding history though.
I particularly liked the elven stronghold of Gondolin, i so wish PJ could do a flashback scene in the last film so we can see what it looked like. I'm not sure if any of the characters would have seen it though. I think Elrond is too young, although Galadriel was about and could have gone up that way.
Come to think of it Cirdan would have been around too.
And maybe even Gandalf when he was still a Maiar, or whatever they are called.
Hav eyou read Unfinished Tales, theres some quality stuff in that. I think the best is finding out why Gandalf first came to Bag-end with all the dwarves in An Unexpected Party in the hobbit.
I loved that part!

Have today watched the behind the scenes preview for The Return of The King (available on the Two Towers DVD from Tuesday). I'm really, and I mean, really looking forward to it. Forget the Matrix, and Terminator 3 was average. This year's film, also the final part of a trilogy, will be The Return of the King.
Also the best DVDs of this year are yet to come. The Lion King Special Edition in October, and The Two Towers Extended Version in November.

RotK. That's a short three and a half hours. All the jokes by the actors on tv interviews about a five hour extended edition.... gee, I wish they weren't joking, it'd rock!

Whilst doing my round this morning, ROTK 2 Disc DVD has been announced for May 25th, three months earlier than on previous form. Extended Edition, no word as of yet, but maintaining a November release seems likely.
