Martin Sheen is a well-known Democrat and outspoken critic of President Bush. But would it be a good idea for him to try running for the presidency?
I don't think he has ever said he wants to do this but Arnold Schwarznegger's gubernatorial campaign in California made me think about actors in politics. With Sheen it would be different of course.
Given that he plays a president on television would it be wrong of him to exploit this and run for the presidency in real-life?
What do you guys think?

I'm unsure. Playing the President it was inevitable that a reporter would ask him if he would ever run for public office. To which he said something along the lines of no, you'd have to be seriously mad to want to do something like that.
I don't think he'll ever, as they say it, put his hat in the ring. That said, though, a lot of Americans would rather he was the President instead of that election-stealing, half-a-million-less-votes-than-the-other-guy, smug Republican in the White House today.
It's a shame that Al Gore isn't running for the Democratic nomination for 2004. I'm certain he'd stand a very good chance at beating Bush. Let's face it, he won last time. He won the popular vote not by a handful but by several hundred thousand, In a country of several hundred million that may not sound like much, but not everybody votes.
If only those Jews hadn't accidently voted for that guy who said Hitler was good.....
But as for Martin Sheen, I'm sure he'll never run but if he did, I'd only say he'd have as fair a chance as the next guy. He's considered rather liberal, going by his opinions and what he gets up to outside that recreated Oval Office set. I don't know if America likes liberal.

If Arnie can get into politics i'm sure Martin Sheen could. He's a true democrat who sticks to his beliefs and has even been arrested because of his strong convictions. He'd make a better president than the present incumbent.

I'm almost afraid to say this ... I don't think Martin Sheen would make a good president. Just because you can 'act' like a president, doesn't actually 'make' you one. Just look at Bush! Martin Sheen is a great actor, but not a politician. I'm sure he has his own strong believes and that he is a good Democrat, but that doesn't mean that you know how to be a president. A lot of people in the USA are good Democrats ... are they all equipped to become president? I seriously doubt it. I'm not quite sure where, but I saw Martin Sheen giving an interview once where he was asked if he would be a good president. He answered that he lacks patience for the job and that he himself doesn't think he could handle the job properly. There is so much to do and to take in consideration when you are the leader of a world-nation like the USA. I doubt Martin Sheen has the capacity to become a great president. You have to be strong, confident, compassionate and even ruthless at the same time. I'm sure Martin has some great qualities, but not to be president. In the world of TWW it's easy to launch an attack on some foreign country or to declare war since it's only fiction, but imagine having to make a choice like that in real life. Makes you think, doesn't it? Let's face it ... life is not a TV-show! Don't shoot me now, please!

You made a good point. I think someone who has the same beliefs as Sheen and like Sheen will stand by them though hell ( he was a victim of vandalism and abuse over Iraq) but is better at real life politics would make an outstanding president. Or for that matter Prime Minister( did anyone read the letters section in this weeks radio times by a guy called James Mayfield called 'Give The Wing A Spin' suggesting CJ and Bartlet do British Politics?

i have been saying this forever. i wish someone like martin could be president. and no i am not getting confused between the character and the person. he has been intelligent and outspoken on many issues. and spends a great deal of time campaigning and demonstating about things he believes in. god i would move to america just to vote for him! unfortunately though, i doubt very much that he would ever run for any sort of public office. his comments re arnie running for governer suggest that he believes celebrity and politics need to remain seperate.

Sheen is considered a radical and admits that his own politics are "far to the left of" Bartlet never mind Bush! Which is probably why in an era of political consensus he wouldn't have much of a chance. Me, I'd vote for him 100 times out of 100. After all, it's the 'radicals' who changed the course of that admirable yet deeply flawed nation's history for the better, and people like the current incumbent who did the opposite.

I think sheen would make a fantastic president. I am not just saying this from watching ww either. For a long time he has been active in protesting and he makes his ideas very clear.
Also if an idiot like G dubya can get in the white house im sure anyone could do the job.

Sheen would make a far better President than Dubya, no doubt. But from what I've heard he is a very much a lefty. I'd prefer someone a bit more like Bartlet. It sucks so much, I have American citizenship, but can't vote against Bush next year cos I've never been resident there!

That is most definately what they need! I would love that.
Martin Sheen...hmm. Not sure. Maybe not. A little too liberal for the masses, perhaps.
