Looks like the US are finally getting season 1 on DVD, and if the reports right its going to be a great box set. But why don't we get all these special features included on our DVD's. From: tvshowsondvd.com/The actually U.S. Election Day this year may be the fourth, but Warner Home Entertainment has voted for November 18th as the street date for The West Wing: The Complete First Season. This complete, 22-episode debut year of the exciting and thought-provoking series about the inner workings of a White House headed by President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) is presented on 4 discs and includes exclusive, must- see extras. Among these will be lots of extra footage (gag reels ["Gag Order"] & outtakes ["Off The Record"], deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes stuff), commentary tracks from creator Alan Sorkin and director Thomas Schlamme on 5 episodes ["Pilot," "What Kind Of Day Has It Been," "Take This Sabbath Day," "In Excelsis Deo" (featuring additional commentary from Co-Executive Producer/Director Alex Graves) and "Celestial Navigation" (with Co-Executive Producer/Director Chris Misiano joining Sorkin and Schlamme)], featurettes "The Primaries" and "The West Wing Inauguration", and interviews with folk both in front of and behind the camera. Warner mandates this release will be in 1.33:1 video format and Dolby Surround Stereo audio format, in English. Subtitles will be in English, French, and Spanish. The 4 DVDs in the set will be Double Sided/Dual Layer "DVD18" discs. The SRP is $59.98 for this Emmy-winning inaugural season.

Double sided? God, I thought we were over that sort of thing? Still, if the price is right, I'll buy.

Now listed on Amazon.com. The complete first season for $38.99, which converts to around £25, minus the p&P. Postage would probably be about £10 - £15 from Amazon. PlayUSA.com haven't listed this item yet, I'd like to see their listed price.
I'll probably buy the R1 set if they really do have the extra material we didn't get. A gag reel/outtakes would be a good enough reason to flash the cash.

There's nothing stopping you buying them from America. If you have a multi-region DVD player (most people do) then you should be fine. I doubt Warner Bros. will re-release season one DVDs since they released the first batch only 18 months ago. And it wouldn't be the first time that the UK has had a DVD released that is identical to the US version, minus a couple of features here and there. We're all taken for fools Damn the Hollywood studios, Hell and damnation.....

Couldn't we start up a petition or something for Warner Bros just to release the extras over here. They could start a new trend.

How do I tell if my player (which I only installed this month) plays R1 DVDs?

Mister, that's the sort of thing you should know at the time of buying!
If it said multi-region then you're sailing. If it said multi-region and NTSC playback then even better if your TV is in the standard PAL format. If it just said NTSC playback then you're screwed because this only means it will play discs in the NTSC format, but only those that are region 2 encoded.
If you have a DVD-rom then you can set it to play region one. However, you can only do this for a limited number of times, usually five and then you can't keep changing it after that.
The only way to know if you can play R1 is to buy a R1 disc and see if it works. Either borrow one if you know somebody with one or check out playusa.com which has some great priced imports. Their R1 WW S1 is priced at £32.99 including delivery.

Thank you for the info. You're damn right I should know at the time of buying, and it was one of my main criteria if buying muself... but then I had one bought as a birthday present and I would've felt a *tad* ungrateful to ask the R1 question in those circumstances!

www.dvdhelp.com has a search facility for DVD player where you can find out what it plays. If you know the make/model no. then it might be listed there. Otherwise, only testing will tell. Usually, the well known brand names tend to offer the least features. It's the lesser known names that provide the versatility.

Don't quite sure why, but that makes me kinda excited It may be because it appears WB is speeding up it's release dates, instead of drip feeding us everything in their catalogue. It adds a bit of weight to the season 4 DVDs in October/November thing.

I seriously want to get a multi-region DVD player so I can buy these R1 DVDs with all the extra features.
But I was looking at Amazon and there was a warning saying that Warner Bros DVDs may have a Region Code Enhancer (something like that) which can detect whether your player is multi-region or R1 only, and if it's multi region it won't play them.
So, has anyone imported the first season and is there a problem of this kind with the DVDs? If not then I will go ahead, but I want to be sure before shelling out for DVDs and another player. Actually, while I'm at it, what's the cheapest decent multi-region DVD player you can get?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Defeating RCE will of course depend on the DVD player you acquire. As far as I can remember, it has not cause any problems for me, and I use a supposedly modified Toshiba player from www.techtronics.com (I say supposedly because I'm sure they ripped me off by selling me a player at cost that I later noticed is SHIPPED by Toshiba as a multi-region model). If a player says it can get around RCE then I suppose it should. Ebay is riddled with these types of players. Don't forget to check if your TV is NTSC compatible. NTSC playback on PAL TV is not the same thing, though if you do have a VCR with NTSC pb on PAL TV, you can check compatibility by switching off the NTSC>PAL TV option, play a NTSC tape and see what happens. Black and white picture then no, colour picture then yes it's compatible. The NTSC/PAL issue can be skipped around by buying a DVD player that has an NTSC | PAL option. Toshiba models tend to have this, a little switch on the back of the player that will output the standard you prefer regardless of the material being played. That however is not the best option, and a multi-standard TV is preferable (not as uncommon as anyone may think, it's a very standard feature with many new TVs, especially widescreen sets). ----------------------------------------------------- If it's of any interest to know the sort of thing required for worldwide playback of dics, I use the following stuff: DVD: Toshiba SD420e. Multi region, no problems with RCE that I know of. This can be picked up pretty cheaply. Last I checked, about 50, 60 quid on Amazon.co.uk, which is significantly less than the 240 I paid. TV: Philips PW6006. Which again..... Christ! Not a very expensive set anymore. Rejoice, as it is a multi-standard set that can display any standard; NTSC, PAL, SECAM..... all of them as far as I know. Philips make good TVs, so do Toshiba. Sony tend to be restrictive with what a set can do and JVC should just leave the market altogether. ----------------------------------------------------- I've not bought the region one sets yet but I do intend on doing so. Partly for the extras, partly for the box designs and partly because I sold my region 2's on eBay the other week (to force me hand to buy the R1's). The season two boxset coming up in May intrigues me. It's advertised all over the place as being widescreen. First of all I assume that's either an error in details or WB will release a cropped version of what we've already got. But I hear rumours more and more that it was preserved for future widescreen display, since S2 aired at a time when WS was being introduced slowly but surely across NBC and other US networks. The significances of this is that if this turns out to be true, then we got an uninterested offering from WB when they released season two last year. ANYWAYYYYYY, as this display of geek bravado comes to a close, www.playusa.com for all your region one DVDs. It's the same as play.com with USA stuck onto the end of it's address. PlayUSA will charge 32.99 delivered (30.99 delivered for S2). Amazon on the other hand will charge whatever it is they charged plus at least 8 quid extra for international delivery. Which is another plus point for Play where if it says 'in stock' then they have it in their warehouse on Jersey or wherever the hell it is they trade from these days. It's quicker and cheaper and that has to be a good thing. My final tip, if there is ever any doubt, buy a cheap region one DVD that has RCE to check compatibility and stuff before shelling out for the decent stuff.
