"Many issues are in play during a White House party to celebrate the argumentative First Lady's (Stockard Channing) birthday as she contemplates the likely loss of her medical license the next day while the President (Martin Sheen) is visited by proper British Ambassador Marbury (Roger Rees) who argues against Bartlet's meeting with a murderous Irish terrorist. In other rooms, Sam (Rob Lowe) meets with a Senator (Robin Thomas) who is blocking funding a controversial superconductor that would cost billions; Donna (Janel Moloney) discovers that she's really Canadian -- and techically not an American; Abbey, C.J. (Allison Janney) and several of the women mischievously steal away in a closet to drink, dish and diss. "
This is another really good episode. My best bits have to be Donna being a Candian then not, and Donna being frank with Mrs B, and of course Lord John Marlbury (matched perfectly with Toby) . This episode also makes me hate Amy even more thanI did before, the way she treated Josh (for the second time going over his head to Mrs B).

well now that i am all signed up i thought i should venture out of the lobby.....
loved this ep too. esp the donna being canadian stuff and the look of horrror on bartlets face when he came back to the anthem playing.
am probably going to get lynched for this but...dont actually mind amy all that much. she and josh are quite funny together and i think it would ruin the donna josh thing for them to get together too soon. although she is sort of like abby jnr, same facial expressions (or lack thereof) and everything.
i liked that donna put abby in her place when the others were too scared. but it was a shame that the women first couldn't open a bottle between them and then got drunk before starting the second bottle of wine (between four)
was funny seeing sam suck up to his old teacher, and malbury didnt irritate me half as much as he has on previous occasions!

Lord John, I bask in your glory. Still the only character who can make Leo / Gerald uncomfortable. A brilliant episode where AS sums up the American position on the Irish situation to perfection, ie, when is a terrorist not a terrorist ? When there are votes and funds to be gained !

Gerald! LJM rulz ok! A pretty good episode, but it didn't seem to lead into what it started out to do. I didn't think it ever really got going. I really enjoyed the whole Donna being a Canadian though, and it was well funny when FLOTUS arranged the national anthem. Plus big John was in, of course! d

Great episode, prob one of the funniest so far. I had forgotten that Leo got called Gerald by the fantastic intoxicated LJM so I burst out laughing when he did. Donna scenes were good but i really dont know how she can eat olives on their own. Highlight had to be the drunk scene or the canadian anthem scene, and I also agree that when she has her head tilted in a particular direction, Abbey looked the spitting image of Amy. spooky.

When I first saw LJM back when TWW was being shown on C4 I wasn't overly impressed. I thought, here's another American stereotype of the English, to go with the warm beer and all the others.
I was wrong. He's one of the classic guest appearances this show offers us.
Best part of this ep. Donna being Canadian/not being Canadian and Bartlet returning to the party to the sight of the Canadian flag and sound of the anthem.

One thing I've noticed is that LJM appearances seem to be used as a tool when tackling a serious subject. He brings a serious and a funny side in the episode eg India & Pakistan, the Ireland Issue , Test ban treaty. Just when you think he's had enough drink and is beggining to talk jibberish he suprises you. He also gets away with a lot with POTUS & 'Gerald', at times he's extremely rude and at others shows a great deal of respect towards them both. Would like to see more of him.
