Hmm... it's hard. I'd have to go for series 2 overall, I think. Series 1 had some absolute crackers but I was browsing the box y'day and there wasn't a single one in the first half of S1 that made me think 'that is SO good'. I think the second half had some excellent ones though, and I think this pattern is also true of S3, which boomed at the end but had a very slow first half. S2 also picked up at the end, but it had some much better ones at the beginning, most of the second half of S2 is sublime viewing...

Not even "The Crackpots and These Women" (so good it's hard to watch knowing Sorkin isn't around any more )? Not 'In Excelsis Deo'? In fact, all of the first six are brilliant, and the first half-season is among the most consistently good drama ever. Certainly better than the first half of S3, which I still think - by comparison - is the weakest half-season of the lot (excepting the obvious B4A). Mind you, I have to agree with your theory on second half-seasons (S2 especially), what with S1 boasting He Shall... , Take Out The Trash, Sabbath Day and Celestial Navigation... all in a row! My, we were blessed...

Well.... I thought In Excelsis Deo was pretty good but not absolutely amazing (probably cos I always end up comparing it to Noel), and to be honest it's been so long since I've seen The Crackpots I can't remember... am I right in thinking that's the first Big Block Of Cheese Day? Really should watch the episodes more before making sweeping comments!

Yes, it's the first Big Block of Cheese. Wolves only highway and UFOs. It's also: Josh and the NSA card and "I just want to be able to look them in the eye." Josh and the story about his sister and the fire (subtly linked to the above) The basketball game, a legendary pre-credits sequence even by TWW standards: "It was Steffi Graf, sir!" Bartlet's smallpox speech at the end Bartlet and Leo talking about "these women" Toby's paranoia about not being first choice for the job, and Bartlet's tribute to him "In a battle between a president's demons and his better angels, for the first time in a long time, I think we may have ourselves a fair fight." In short, "the episode that will turn you from a casual viewer into a bona fide fan" (Topping) or the one that makes you fall in love with every character*, even if you weren't already. (*well, maybe not Mandy
