I thought would be a nice way to pay tribute to the cast. Basically, just name the episode which you think saw the most outstanding performance from a core cast member, or the one which best summed up a particular character. So, for example, these would be mine:
Bartlet: Two Cathedrals Leo: Bartlet For America Josh: Noel Toby: 17 People Sam: Somebody's Going To Emergency, Somebody's Going To Jail CJ: this is difficult because she's so consistently good but I can't think of one episode that really sums her up. Maybe Take Out The Trash Day, as it shows her (with Mr.Lydell) letting her emotions get the better of her judgment, but eventually taking control. And Danny's in it. Charlie: Mr. Willis Of Ohio (especially in the bar) Donna: Bartlet's Third State of the Union (the banter with Josh about Joey Lucas)
Feel free to add others, eg Mandy, Abbey, Ainsley, Danny, Hoynes.

Ha! Mandy!
Sorry to mock, but she was rubbish. I hope she stays in West Wing oblivion (or the dark room, according to the Parody! thread)
Bartlet: Two Cathedrals/ He Shall, From Time To Time.... Leo: Bartlet For America Sam: Hartsfield's Landing/California 47th (s4) Josh: Noel Toby: 20 Hours In America (s4) C.J. The Long Goodbye (s4)/ The Women Of Qumar John Hoynes: Life On Mars (s4)
And they all have their moments in other episodes, like the one where Josh says 'good a place as any to dump your body" when Bartlet suggests a staff trip to some national park.

Bartlet: He's pretty damn good in a lot of episodes, notably He Shall From Time To Time...., Let Bartlet Be Bartlet, And It's Surely To Their Credit for example, but overall it has to be Two Cathedrals. Leo: Bartlet For America (seems to be a favourite amongst many) Josh: Noel is the most 'Joshy' (sorry, I can't think of another way of putting it) episode going. Toby: 20 Hours In America for losing a bet to Josh and having to spend the rest of the day saying "Hi I'm Toby Ziegler.... I work at the White House" And In Excelsis Deo and Holy Night. Sam: I just don't know with Sam. I've not seen in a long time Somebody's Going To Emergency.... and it seems to be popular. CJ: The Crackpots And These WomenMargaret: In The Shadow Of Two GunmenMandy: In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen and all the other episodes she isn't in

When I suggested other characters, I really wasn't expecting such harsh treatment of Mandy!!!! No, actually I was. She never clicked really, did she? It seems to be universal, this feeling about her. Certainly one of the main reasons I preferred season 2 was the absence of Mandy! Still, bizarre how she just vanished. If I HAD to pick a "Mandy" episode it'd be either Six Meetings Before Lunch (the panda) or, more cynically, Let Bartlet Be Bartlet (because she gets ostracised and her memo is the prime cause of what leads to that GLORIOUS ending where the rest of the senior staff do their "I serve at the pleasure of the President" spiel). But hell, it's difficult. With the others it's not easy to pick just one. Other characters Ainsley: Bartlet's Third State of the Union (though In This White House is almost as good) Danny: Let Bartlet Be Bartlet (similar reason to Mandy above, also a key turning point with CJ). I also love his Dallas Morning News! bit in the last episode of season 1. Still undecided as to whether CJ has a definitive episode...

This is just an observation, but kind of related to this thread.
In each of the first three seasons there has been an outstanding Christmas episode which puts one of the core ensemble at the centre:
In Excelsis Deo (Toby) Noel (Josh) Bartlet For America (Leo)
In all cases, the actor playing this role has gone on to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor...Check the records, it's true!
My question therefore is, does season 4 have a Christmas episode which revolves around one of the core cast? And if so, any gamblers amongst you would be well advised to put some cash on the actor winning an Emmy!!

I caught the christmas episode from series 4 whilst on my annual shopping trip to New York (everyone thought I was mad staying in to watch TV, but hey it was the west wing!). The episode was based around Toby - so we will have to wait for January and see if you theory proves correct.

Here's one more:
Fitz: What Kind of Day Has It Been. Because I love the bit where, amidst huge tension about the pilot down in the Iraqi no-fly zone, he starts talking about the eagle on the carpet in peace and war and then, almost casually, takes the call and puts the Pres through to said pilot. "Well, that's awfully good work, Fitz", Bartlet says, or something. Great stuff.

I hope we never see anything as stupid as Will Bailey shouting out for it to rain, and then a torrential downpour immediately begins (Election Night). Cause that was just stoopid' So far, California 47th is Will's best ep.

Oof, yes, that was poor, wasn't it? Amidst all the recent brilliance I'd forgotten that completely!
