This has to be some kind of joke. The West Wing is NOT The West Wing without Martin Sheen. They can NOT continue the show in any way without him

I wish it was some kind of joke, but they seem pretty serious about it unfortunately. I really dont think the programme will work without Bartlet. Its ridiculous to even consider it. Wells needs his head reexamining!

There has been a lot of talk on other forums that they are taking about Sheen's character rather than Sheen. I think that things have got to change as there can only be 2 or may be 3 seasons left with Bartlett as president, and it would only be natural for the characters to start looking for new opportunities. This also fits in with some spoliers that I've heard of for season 6 - which at the time I thought were rubbish as they seem so unrealistic... but prehaps not.

please no like lemon lyman i have read some spoliers and the news is not good. You are taking the core of the show away as surely John Spencer will be scraped as well or dumbed down in some capacity. this is hard to write never mind to believe!!!! does this bring Sam back in some shape or form? 'Dont be afraid, you will run for President some day? All I can say is I am gutted to think that we could be facing the West Wing without Sheen

Say it isn't so. What will we do without President Bartlet. Damn the two term limit.

I too had read this article on another website. Doesnt instill much confidence in the future of the show. Also reading between the lines - he sounds quite happy about !!! Enjoy the show while it lasts!

It's sad, but probably a blessing in disguise. I'd rather it finished than go crap after all.

Agree but it is sad.........also read an article in the Independent today referring to the West Wing bringing back old writers to add reality to the show again after Wells wrote ER style scripts for the West Wing. It stated the American public tuned 'out' in their millions as they found the storylines to unrealistic. The script writers are now going to add reality back to the show by 'nabbing' ideas from the Bush/Kerry race to the Whitehouse and bring back more close to home polictics to get people interested again. Also stated that the heavy issues they tackled were not what people where looking for and 'they forgot the funny' in season 4/5. Apparently 3 of 9 scripts written have been filmed with 22 in total being completed. Lets hope they remember the funny!!!!!!!! EDIT: Heres the link to the story news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=550816

OK, I hate to be the one swimming against the tide of public opinion, but I actually think a Bartlet-less West Wing could hold some interesting prospects for television.
Perhaps Sam could return as 'the youngest Democratic President in history' (not the first time TWW has reflected real life!) though I think this is unlikely. Much more likely is the political rebirth of Hoynes as a smooth-talking Southern Democratic Contender. Could this lead to Josh being given a much bigger role, after it has been hinted that had Hoynes won before, Josh would have had Leo's job. There are so many directions the series could take, I think it is incredibly pessimistic to immediately assume that a West Wing without Martin Sheen would be necessarily worse!
