Cable mix-up disrupts 'West Wing'

No, President Bartlet was not fantasizing about the reality TV show "Paradise Hotel" Wednesday night during "The West Wing."
But it might have seemed that way to viewers in parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A crossed wire in the Comcast Cable system resulted in the sound from Fox's "Paradise Hotel" drowning out "The West Wing."
The mix-up prompted thousands of e-mails and phone calls to the local NBC affiliate, NBC 10 spokeswoman Eva Blackwell said Thursday. " 'West Wing' is a hot show," she said.
About 1.4 million television households could have been affected, Blackwell said. The station did not know how many people were watching. The Sept. 24 episode was the ninth most popular show that week, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Newark-area resident Kathy Weston was watching "The West Wing" when the problem occurred. She said she turned on every TV in the house, hoping one of them would work properly. Eventually she gave up and tried to ignore the "Paradise Hotel" dialogue.
" 'Paradise Hotel' was so not the show I wanted to be hearing," Weston said.
During the second half of the show, a main fiber optic line went down, Comcast spokeswoman Nissa O'Mara said. The backup system kicked in, but the cable carrying the sound for Fox was plugged into the slot for NBC, she said.
Blackwell said NBC 10 would find out this morning if it has permission from the network to rerun the episode at 12:30 p.m. Sunday
