People have told me S5 is a let down, but I was quite impressed with last's night's episode. Usual West Wing finesse overall. Beautiful performance from the Bartlet family, nice to see Liz.
Highs: Leo's divided loyalties; that stupid dog (awful but excellent); CJ telling Danny to leak. Leo & Jed's streetlight conversation from the Residence window.
Lows: Acting Prez's Kit Kat Klub crack to CJ (incredibly tasteless, though I'm hoping this was intentional); the way Acting Prez's staff sidelined the Senior Staff and you just knew they were making completely the wrong decisions.

Very relieved by last night's episode I must admit. Well paced, with a great ending. My only problem is John Goodman's characature of a Republican Neo-Conservative. For a show that has always offered brilliant characters, I thought the acting President was cliched, almost an attempt at a parody of the guys running the US today!
I understand that they are attempting to portray an anti-Bartlett who is determined to bomb the hell out of Qumar but at times I didn't think the character was entirely believable.
Still, the show kept me hooked and I can't wait for the next one!

I've said my bit about last night in another thread, but will just respond to this.
I think the crack he made to CJ was meant to be tasteless, judging by her reaction. Trying to be in with the gang but missing by miles.
The pace was excellent all the way through.

I too have posted on another thread re the first episode but thought I would say again how good the opening was and the acting from John Spencer deserves another mention. The guys face when he was talking about Zoey getting killed for sure was incredible. (Im a big Leo fan) Totally agree alanna - lows was a dodgy acting prez to say the least. I must confess to seeing some of the season 5 episodes - some great some not so great but to a 'wing nut' we can forgive!!

Thought it was very good. The dog was funny. The ending was fantastic, the west wing always has such good music. Can't wait for the next one.
Can't believe channel 4 has no intentions to repeat the episodes, if anything goes wrong with my tv one tuesday i dread to think what i'll do.

The main thing that struck me about this episode was the fantastic camerawork all the way through, especially striking in the final sequence and when Josh, Toby, Will and Donna are watching Walken's address in the bullpen. I love this episode, I really do. Although I was worried that they were trying too hard with it, if they keep it going like that it could turn out a bit strained, if you see what I mean. And also, I love Toby. "I'd carpetbomb Mecca to get my kids back." Low for me: Abbey's response to the Sharif thing...I know that she's stressed out of her mind but still, Jed's the President, not her. He didn't have to consult her about the decision, especially as none of the senior staff (minus Leo) knew about it! Does anyone agree, or did I read the scene wrongly?

As she only knew about it from the press conference I'd guess she assumed it was known by the senior staff. I think what she was doing was looking for a place to put the blame and so "if you hadn't killed him we'd still have Zoey" makes sense to her at that time.
I loved seeing the more human side of the first family. We've only seen Abbey and her involvement in her husband's campaign and presidency, or as a doctor, never really as a mother. I thought her running into the press room at the end of the last season was brilliant, and they've taken her grief on from this brilliantly this season.

I really enjoyed it. A very moving episode and the plot with Walken as temporary President is great. Toby's "I'd carpetbomb Mecca to get my kids back." line just hit the nail on the head.

Constituency of One. What a great episode last night - and the trailer for next week looks even better! I don't think anyone in the building is having a good time at the moment.
