Ignoring the impression given to us by The West Wing, who here would actually like to have a job in politics, British of course? How many times do you watch the news and think, I could have said that, or, I have a better suggestion and perhaps, That's such a simple issue even I could solve that and yet they can't seem to figure it out?

I wouldn't want to be a MP, but I would love a job behind the scenes advising on Domestic Policy. I really good at analyising things and thinking of every possible eventuallity which you would have to do. I also have this real tendancy to have lots of ideas about what happens in the news especially to do with the NHS, Schools etc which I would love to have a go at putting into practice.
I mean which advisor told Tony Blair it was a good idea to bring in university fees - major PR disaster.
I'm also a work-a-holic so this sort of job would suit me down to the ground.

I agree with Lemon Lyman. I would consider being a PR/Policy counsellor or advisor and I tend to think better at night so I could work the hours easily enough.

no way would i be in politics , i'd argue too much and never get anything done. my solicitor who bailed me out for dnd a few times is now an mp for plaid cymru , his name is elfyn llywd , he was a nice chap but since he's been an mp he's changed into a bit of a snob , it might be the nature of the job , if so you can stuff it !

"Bailed me out for DnD a few times...". Who is letting these people in here. Please, we have standards to keep up (only joking).
I wouldn't mind politics at all, unfortunately my job demands that I have to remain apolitical at all times which isn't always easy. However, like most of us, after a few glasses of red wine, there isn't a problem going which I haven't put right !

I would love a career in politics. Either behind the scenes advisor, campaigner manager type or as an MSP. I'm thinking of standing for the local council in 4 years. If it was going to be like the west wing i'd go into politics tomorrow. The Bartlet administartion always do the right thing and are all good and honest. Sadly it's not like that.

forget it , my old man has been on the council for thirty years , he's also mayor this year for the sixth time and it's a nightmare , not for him but for us . i for one ,and my bro , cannot understand the BS of it all , it really is a load of BO££OCKS , the town council that is . all the so called power is with the county council , the town council tries but ALWAYS gets vetoed by the county so its almost like a lame duck council , all they do is talk and talk , i could give you examples but i don't want to bore you zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The closest I ever got to being in politics was running for part-time exec in my Students Union. And, of course, NUS Conference where politics took a back seat to helping ordinary students

I would love to become involved in Politics, I'm under educated, working class background, opinionated, and have some very dodgy mates...... sounds perfect to me.
But in all seriousness I am very interested and am starting to look into it but have no idea where to start so if somebody wants to give me a clue where to start ( on the net or in local library) I would appreciate it.

Berlusconi. Silvio Berlusconi. I was just thinking, why don't we have anybody like that in our country. And then I remembered, we do. John Prescott. Seeing him punching that man with the mullet still makes me laugh, and if the Anti-Mullet society ever needed a leader well, I can see no better choice.
Back to the subject which I started but never answered, I would like a job in politics. Wanting one is one thing, knowing what to do when there is another.

God no ... I'd go mentally insane if I would go into politics! They'd have to lock me up! There are so many things you have to know about and you always have to think about the other parties involved. You have to search for ways to handle certain situations without pissing too many people off. You have to try and keep everybody happy. I wouldn't do that ... I would just go by my own instincts and do what I thought was right! I wouldn't consider other parties and that's not the attitude to have when you're in politics.
So ... I say ... leave politics to the people who are born for it. People who know exactly what they are doing.
Granted, I don't know many people like that. The politicians I know are all very good at screwing things up, but once in a while a good man or woman stands up and those are the ones that matter.

Interesting topic, bearing in mind that since Thursday we have been living through one of those times in British politics where reality has suddenly exceeded anything fiction could dream up...

Yes once in a while the people do show up who are meant to be great leaders and free thinkers and what do we do as humans - we kill those people (martin Luther, malcolm X, John Lennon, JFK, the list could go on)
but hey it could be worse................. honest
