There can't be romantic relationship history because otherwise there would be tension as well as intimacy, either that or they got over it better than anybody I ever met! I think AS writes friendship intimacy really really well, which is unusual in a drama. Only people who are certain of their friendship or married for 40 years react that comfortably. Although having said that can you imagine Toby having a different reaction like jumping in the pool to rescue ANYONE?!

Toby jumping into a pool - now thats comedy!
Aaron Sorkin wrote everything brilliantly, not just friendship! No Emmy for Allison this year...I'm not sure what the panel were playing at!
WRT the Lead Actress Emmy for S3 - Perhaps as Allison's status rose with The West Wing, and seeing as she was the main woman on it, apart from Janel, they decided she was worthy of a Lead Actress award!

In The Women of Qumar throughout that episode CJ is fab. You can tell just how cut up she is about women's rights when they don't have any. Agreed, that's superb. Also the death penalty epsiode (can't remember what or when) where she struggles with being drawn between two points of view, I think that's done excellently.
